Week One

I made a blog earlier. It was out of curiosity about blogs. This blog is for a purpose. I think purpose makes things different. I did not find any difficulty in creating this blog. Since,  I have a google account, it was an easy task. The only difficulty was to get a blog address which I found interesting. It does not mean that I have got it well ! It is interesting to try combination of words for the address.

What makes me really happy is the 'e' platform which enables us to talk to each other which otherwise would not have been possible. When I read the names of my classmates who are from different corners of the world, I realise that the world is so small that I can hold it in my palm. I am a bit confused about the names. How to pronounce certain names is really a difficulty; for Eg. How is the name 'Csilla' pronounced? I found this transcription ʧilːɒ on the Wiktionary. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Csilla#Pronunciation.
Is that okay, Csilla? (I take Csilla's name because it is very short and I thought I could sort it out)

How about transcribing our names into IPA?
Mine will be something like this: /sud͡ʒiθ/

  1. Hi Sujith- What a great idea! I think this is one limitation of the online class, and I have met more then one online student in person where i pronounced the name wrong after feeling like I knew them long and well. There is a nice little web app at http://ipa.typeit.org/ that allows you to easily type in ipa. -Robert

    1. Dear Robert,

Thanks for your comment. I think all of the participants must be able to call each other correctly by the end of the course. Thanks for the link.

      Wish you the best

  2. Hello Sujith,

Do you teach phonetics at high school? Here in Burkina, we used to do it in the past, but not now anymore. I don't know why? But at university it is taught at the English Department.

    1. Dear Bernie,

      Thanks for your comment.
Here, we do not teach phonetics at high school level. It is taught only at college level. I think introduction of IPA symbols at school would be of great benefit to learners for looking up in dictionary! Still the problem comes when trying to read proper nouns. A normal dictionary does not carry pronunciation of names.

  3. Dear Sujith,

First of all, for me it caused a little problem to give a name to my blog as Csilla was already a recerved domain name. So I had to use a blog name crator software, and it suggested me 'csillage' = csilla's age.
Secondly, I also did not find my blog's URL name. Bernie helped me in it. I can already thank a lot to him.
To go forward, you find a correct pronunciation for my name. 'CS' is a Hungarian sound like the English 'CH'. My name is a rare Hungarian name that was created in the 18th century by one of our famous poet Mihály Vörösmarty. It means 'star'.

    Regards,
    Csilla

  4. Hi Sujith,
I guess you have tried to read my last name which is quite long; in fact, this is typical of Malagasy (the adjective and name of people from Madagascar)names; we have long last names which have a meaning; mine (Razanadraibe) means the grandfather's child. Like most people here, I am called after my father. I'm not sure I will be able to transcribe it phonetically, that's why I prefer people to just call me Colomba (American people generally spell it Columba)but I want to point out that I have no connection whatsoever with Christopher Columbus.

    1. Hi Colomba,
      Grandfather's child!
I have a soft corner to my grandfather. He used to save a lot of slaps for my mischief from my father when I was a kid. He used to stand like the Great Wall of China to protect me form all kinds of verbal/physical assault! I still cherish those memories. He died some fifteen years back. He still lives in my mind. Thank you for invoking those memories. If I could split your last name will it be like this? Razana..Draibe?
